Therapy for Neurodivergent Women & Couples
in Los Angeles | Pasadena | San Diego
ADHD | ASD | Giftedness

You have likely spent years figuring out how to make it work. How to keep up, stay organized, manage the overwhelm, and appear to others like everything is fine. And in many ways it has worked- you are capable, driven, and have built a life that reflects that.

But underneath, something has always felt harder than it should. Not because you aren't trying- but because your nervous system, your brain, and your emotional world work differently than the systems and structures built around you.

For many neurodivergent women, the diagnosis- whether ADHD, ASD, giftedness, or a combination- comes late, if at all. What comes first is the exhaustion of masking, the self-doubt that builds from years of not understanding why things that seem easy for others feel so hard, relationship challenges, and the quiet grief of a version of yourself you never quite got to meet.

Therapy here is not about fixing how you're wired. It is about understanding and supporting it- and building a life and relationships that actually fit.

ADHD & Neurocomplexity in Women- What It Actually Looks Like

ADHD in women is frequently missed, misdiagnosed, or attributed to anxiety and depression alone. Many high-functioning women develop sophisticated ways to compensate or mask, over-preparing, over-committing, pushing through exhaustion- while quietly struggling with focus, emotional regulation, and a persistent sense of falling short despite genuine effort and ability.

What this often looks like in daily life:

  • Chronic overwhelm that doesn't match your actual circumstances

  • Difficulty with follow-through, time, or organization despite understanding consequences

  • Emotional intensity or reactivity that feels disproportionate

  • Relationships strained by patterns you can feel but can't seem to change

  • A deep exhaustion from things that most people don't find overwhelming

  • Shame- for the things that feel harder than they should

Research confirms that hormonal fluctuations- across the menstrual cycle, perimenopause, and beyond- directly intensify ADHD symptoms in women. What feels like a sudden worsening of anxiety or emotional dysregulation is often the nervous system responding to hormonal change. This intersection is frequently missed and deserves real clinical attention.

Therapy here works at the level of the nervous system and the emotional patterns underneath- not just the surface behaviors.

When One Partner Is Neurodivergent

In many relationships one partner may be neurodivergent, ADHD, ASD, Gifted or a combination- neurocomplex.  These couples often have the challenges of typical relationships with the additional complexity of one partner processing communication and emotion differently. These differences is partners can unintentionally create cycles of misunderstanding that have nothing to do with lack of care or commitment.

Common patterns include:

  • One partner feeling overwhelmed or overstimulated while the other feels shut out

  • Differences in communication style or emotional expression that create distance

  • Frustration around organization, time management, or follow-through

  • One partner feeling unheard while the other feels constantly criticized

These dynamics are not a character flaw in either person. They reflect differences in how each nervous system processes information, stress, and connection. Couples therapy helps partners understand those differences while building a relationship where both people feel genuinely understood and supported.

How This Work Is Different

Therapy for neurodivergent women at Hardtwell works at the depth where the real shift needs to happen- in the nervous system, in your relationship with yourself, and in the relationships closest to you.

This work draws on somatic therapy and Emotionally Focused Therapy- approaches that work beneath the cognitive layer, with the body and the relational patterns that words alone rarely shift. The goal is not to help you cope more efficiently with a life that doesn't fit. It is to help you build one that does.

I work with neurodivergent women and couples in Los Angeles, Pasadena, San Diego, and throughout California via secure telehealth. Couples are seen in-person only at the Pasadena office.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a formal diagnosis to begin?

No. Many women come to therapy without a formal diagnosis- carrying a felt sense that their brain and nervous system works differently without ever having had it named. That is enough to begin.

I was recently diagnosed as an adult. Where do I start?

A late diagnosis can bring real relief and real grief simultaneously. Therapy here holds space for both- the clarity that comes with understanding yourself differently, and the mourning of time spent not knowing.

Do you work with couples where one partner is neurodivergent?

Yes. I work with couples in-person in Los Angeles and Pasadena.

Where are sessions held?

I offer in-person sessions at my office in Pasadena and Los Angeles.
